The Walkback Drill is a deceptively simple pistol exercise designed to help you discover your effective shooting distance. It puts your accuracy to the test in 5-yard increments, starting close and walking backward until your hits fall apart. This one’s great for solo range days and helps reinforce stance, grip, and sight alignment—especially under distance pressure.
Materials Needed:
- Handgun of choice (EDC or duty gun)
- 1–2 magazines (10–20 rounds total)
- Paper or steel target (ideally an 8” circle or USPSA A-zone)
- Safe outdoor or indoor shooting range
- Eye and ear protection
- Marker or cones (optional for marking distances)
Setup Instructions:
- Place your target downrange at 5 yards.
- Load 5–10 rounds into your magazine.
- Establish a safe firing line and have space to move backward in 5-yard increments.
- Consider pre-marking distances (5, 10, 15, 20, etc.) with tape, cones, or painted lines if available.
Drill Instructions:
- Begin at 5 yards.
- Fire one shot at the target.
- If the shot is a solid hit (within the designated scoring zone), walk back 5 yards.
- Repeat the single-shot sequence from the new distance.
- Continue walking back until you miss.
- Once you miss, the drill ends. Your last successful hit marks your effective range for that target size.
Scoring / Pass Criteria:
- This isn’t a “pass/fail” drill—it’s diagnostic.
- Your goal is to track the distance at which your accuracy begins to drop.
- Repeat over time and look for improvement in consistency and maximum distance.
Coaching Tips / Variations (Optional):
- Vary the target size to add challenge (e.g., 6” circle vs. full A-zone).
- Try it strong hand only, support hand only, or from concealment.
- Shoot two shots per distance instead of one to add consistency testing.
- Mark your personal best on a note card to keep in your range bag.
