The Accelerator Drill is a modern classic used to test and train a shooter’s ability to manage transitions, throttle control, and sight acquisition as both target size and distance change. It forces you to shift gears between shooting fast up close and slowing down for precision at distance—all under one timer.
Originally developed by USPSA Grandmaster Todd Green, it’s a deceptively simple-looking drill that will absolutely expose any sloppy fundamentals.
Materials Needed:
- Handgun and holster (or low-ready start if range rules apply)
- 18 rounds of ammo (6 per run)
- Three silhouette or paper targets (ideally 8”x11” or USPSA A-zone style)
- Shot timer
- Eye and ear protection
- Tape or pasters to reset between reps
Setup Instructions:
- Set up three targets in a straight line, spaced 5 yards apart from each other (left, center, right).
- The shooter starts 7 yards from the middle target.
- You’ll shoot each run from this same position.
- Load a magazine with at least 6 rounds.
- Set a timer to record raw time (no par time needed unless doing it for challenge mode).
Drill Instructions:
- On the buzzer, fire:
- 2 rounds at the closest target (7 yards)
- 2 rounds at the furthest target (15 yards)
- 2 rounds at the middle-distance target (10 yards)
- Target order is always: near → far → mid.
- Engage cleanly, focus on sight picture and recoil management between targets.
- Repeat for 3 total runs (18 rounds total).
Scoring / Pass Criteria:
- Use scoring zones if available (e.g., A-zone or high center chest).
- All hits should land within designated scoring zones.
- No set par time, but clean runs under 4.5 seconds are solid for skilled shooters.
- Work toward clean hits under 3.5 seconds for advanced levels.
- Penalties can be added for misses or shots outside the primary zone.
Coaching Tips / Variations (Optional):
- Reverse the order: mid → far → near for a fresh cognitive challenge.
- Run from concealment or add a reload for advanced manipulation.
- Use smaller targets (4” circles or 3×5 cards) to sharpen precision.
- Pair with dry-fire reps focusing on eye-to-target transitions.
