Man Card Drill: A Defensive Pistol Drill for Speed and Accuracy

The Man Card Drill isn’t about bravado—it’s about performance under pressure. Originally shared by Achilles Heel Tactical, this rifle drill tests your ability to balance speed, accuracy, and transitions with a modern defensive rifle setup. It simulates multiple engagement zones at varied distances and forces the shooter to stay aggressive while keeping their fundamentals tight.

Designed for intermediate to advanced shooters, the Man Card Drill exposes gaps in your rifle handling and marksmanship. It rewards efficient movement, quick sight picture acquisition, and solid recoil control. If you’re looking to measure your rifle competency—and earn bragging rights—you’ve found the right drill.

Materials Needed:

  • Rifle with optic or red dot (zeroed)
  • Magazine with minimum 10 rounds
  • 3 USPSA or IDPA-style targets
  • Shot timer or stopwatch
  • Open shooting lane of 50 yards
  • Man Card drill target printout (optional for added flair)
  • Target stands or tape/stapler

Setup Instructions:

  1. Place 3 targets downrange in a triangular formation:
    • Left and right targets 3 yards apart at 7 yards
    • Center target at 25 yards, centered between the other two
  2. Load rifle with 10 rounds and chamber a round
  3. Stand at the firing line, rifle at low ready or safety-on port arms

Drill Instructions:

  1. On the buzzer, fire:
    • 2 rounds to the left 7-yard target
    • 2 rounds to the right 7-yard target
    • 2 rounds to the 25-yard center target
  2. Repeat the same sequence one more time (total 4 rounds to each close target, 4 to the far target)
  3. Drill ends after 10 total shots

Scoring / Pass Criteria:

  • All shots must land within the A-zone of the USPSA target (or equivalent high-center mass hit zone)
  • Time limit: 10 seconds total
  • Any hit outside A-zone or over time disqualifies the “man card”

The pass requirement is tight: 10 A-zone hits in 10 seconds or less. It’s a simple standard—hit fast and clean or try again.

Coaching Tips / Variations (Optional):

  • For newer shooters, extend the par time to 12–15 seconds to build confidence
  • Swap the center target to 50 yards if your range allows, increasing challenge
  • Try different ready positions—low ready, high port, or from a slung start
  • Run it cold: no warmup, no prep shots, just buzzer and go
  • Use a partner to call hits and track time for real-time accountability
  • Use steel for the 25-yard target if available, for audible feedback

Recommended Target Download – Use a clean USPSA-style silhouette. If you want to brand the moment, print or laminate a novelty “man card” to issue or revoke as needed—training should be fun, too. Check out our free targets at MidAtlanticMunition’s free target library.

The Man Card Drill pushes you to hit clean and hit fast, a balance every rifle shooter should chase. Run it in your next range session, track your times, and if you nail all A-zone hits under 10 seconds, you’ve earned that card. Share your runs and tag @midatlanticmunition on the gram—let’s see if you’re holding on to your card, or shredding it.
