The Failure Drill is a timeless staple in defensive pistol training. Designed to simulate an immediate threat that doesn’t go down with initial shots, it forces the shooter to rapidly transition from a large target area to a much smaller one—just like real-world failure-to-stop scenarios.
Materials Needed:
- Handgun and holster (concealed or duty-style)
- 3 rounds of ammunition per run
- Target with clear torso and head zones
- Shot timer
- Eye and ear protection
Setup Instructions:
- Place a silhouette target at 7 yards.
- The target should have a distinguishable chest box (6–8”) and head box (3–4”).
- Shooter starts from concealed or low ready, depending on training goal.
Drill Instructions:
- On timer beep:
- Fire two rounds to the center chest zone.
- Immediately follow with one round to the head box.
- Emphasize speed without sacrificing precision, especially on the headshot.
Scoring / Pass Criteria:
- Goal time:
- Advanced: Under 2.0 seconds from concealment
- Intermediate: 2.0–3.5 seconds
- Beginner: Focus on clean hits first, then reduce time
- All three rounds must hit their intended zones to pass.
Coaching Tips / Variations (Optional):
- Vary target distance (3–15 yards)
- Practice from seated or compromised positions
- Run in conjunction with other drills for pressure stacking
- Try strong-hand only headshots after a reload
- Incorporate verbal cues to simulate defensive stress
