“The Test,” also known as the 10-10-10 Drill, is a simple and widely respected way to measure fundamental pistol marksmanship. It was popularized by Ken Hackathorn and Larry Vickers, and is a favorite among firearms instructors nationwide. Just 10 rounds, fired in 10 seconds, at 10 yards. No movement, no gimmicks—just you, your gun, and the pressure of the clock.
This drill highlights your ability to manage recoil, maintain sight picture, and stay consistent when the clock is ticking.
Materials Needed:
- Handgun of choice
- Two magazines (10 rounds total)
- A silhouette-style target (preferably a B-8 bullseye or similar)
- Shot timer or shot timer app
- Eye and ear protection
- Tape or marker to patch/score target
Setup Instructions:
- Place a B-8 or equivalent bullseye target at exactly 10 yards.
- Load 10 rounds into your magazine.
- Set your shot timer to a delay start with a 10-second par time.
- Stand in a ready position (low ready or from the holster, depending on your comfort level and range rules).
- Ensure a safe backstop and controlled environment.
Drill Instructions:
- On the timer’s beep, fire 10 rounds into the target.
- You must complete all 10 shots within 10 seconds.
- Focus on smooth, controlled shooting—no panic dumping.
- Once complete, assess your shot placement.
Scoring / Pass Criteria:
- Scoring is usually done using the B-8 target’s scoring rings (max score = 100).
- Passing: 90+ points is generally considered passing.
- Advanced: 95+ is excellent. 98–100 under time is top-tier performance.
- If you’re using a different target, count the number of shots in the high center mass area and evaluate accordingly.
Coaching Tips / Variations (Optional):
- Shoot from concealment to raise difficulty.
- Run it cold at the start of your range session to evaluate baseline performance.
- Add a reload halfway through if you want to work in manipulation under pressure.
- Some shooters run the same drill at 15 yards for an extra challenge.
