One-Two Shots + Scan Drill

This drill helps reinforce one of the most overlooked fundamentals of real-world shooting: breaking your tunnel vision. The One-Two Shots + Scan Drill trains shooters to fire controlled pairs or singles, then immediately break focus from the sights and assess surroundings. It’s not just a marksmanship drill—it’s a mindset drill. Speed is optional. Awareness is not.

Materials Needed:

  • Pistol or rifle
  • 10–20 rounds per run
  • Silhouette or bullseye target (high contrast recommended)
  • Eye and ear protection
  • Shot timer (optional)

Setup Instructions:

  1. Set up your target at 5–10 yards
  2. Shooter starts from a low ready or holstered (concealed carry variant)
  3. Stand square to the target with a clear line of sight
  4. If training with a partner, they can call “threat” to initiate the drill

Drill Instructions:

  1. On signal (verbal or timed), fire one or two accurate shots to center mass
  2. Immediately break your visual focus from the sights and conduct a scan—look left, right, even behind you
  3. Return to low ready after the scan
  4. Repeat for 5–10 strings

Scoring / Pass Criteria:

  • All hits should land in the vital zone (A-zone or equivalent)
  • A “pass” is consistent awareness after each engagement—no tunnel vision
  • Timer use optional, but splits should not compromise accuracy or scan discipline

Coaching Tips / Variations (Optional):

  • Vary between one and two shots per rep
  • Add verbal engagement or simulated multiple threats with numbered targets
  • Practice incorporating a verbal command or post-engagement reload
  • Use a mirror behind you or train with a partner to critique scan effectiveness

Recommended Target Download – Use a silhouette or human-outline target available. Choose one with clearly marked vitals for tracking shot placement under controlled fire. Check out our free targets at MidAtlanticMunition’s free target library.

This drill helps train your brain, not just your trigger finger. Don’t treat it like another marksmanship rep—use it to rehearse real-world habits. Hit, scan, reset. Keep those eyes working as hard as your weapon.
