The Bill Drill was created by USPSA Grand Master Bill Wilson as a way to test a shooter’s ability to draw and deliver rapid, accurate fire under pressure. It strips away everything but the core skills—draw, sight picture, recoil control, and cadence. This drill is brutally honest and perfect for tracking progress in raw shooting speed.
Materials Needed:
- Handgun and holster (open or concealment, depending on use case)
- 6 rounds of ammunition
- Shot timer IPSC, USPSA, or silhouette-style target (A-zone preferred)
- Eye and ear protection
Setup Instructions:
- Place target at 7 yards.
- Shooter begins from the holster, hands at sides or surrender position.
- Shot timer set for start signal.
Drill Instructions:
- On the beep, draw and fire 6 rounds into the target as quickly as possible.
- All rounds must stay within the designated scoring zone (A-zone or similar).
Scoring / Pass Criteria:
- Hits: All 6 rounds in the A-zone.
- Time:
- Expert: Under 2.0 seconds
- Advanced: 2.0 – 2.5 seconds
- Intermediate: 2.5 – 3.5 seconds
- Novice: Over 3.5 seconds (focus on control first)
Coaching Tips / Variations (Optional):
- Focus on a solid grip and sight tracking, not just raw speed.
- Add failure criteria: a single miss = fail.
- Run the drill at different distances (3, 10, or 15 yards) to shift difficulty.
- Try from concealment, with a jacket or cover garment, for real-world relevance.
